A pageant staged by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Philippines sets this glass negative apart from the many parade and ceremony views in the National Photo Company holdings. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War, and the Philippines was a place where many of its members had served during the Philippine-American War of 1899 to 1902. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made pictures of local events for sale in the early twentieth century, and this negative dates to about 1920. Faint streaks across the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth noticing when studying the image.
