A staged scene of Santiago, a reenactment staged for a Veterans of Foreign Wars pageant, recalls the 1898 Battle of Santiago de Cuba, the decisive naval and land engagement of the Spanish-American War. The VFW, founded by veterans of that conflict and later wars, used such pageants to keep the memory of their service in public view. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm known for documenting public events and daily life in the early twentieth century, made the picture around 1920. Its glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coating, which adds to its value as a record of how veterans were commemorated after the war.
