Rosalie Jones, known as "General" Rosalie Jones, is the subject named on this glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Jones gained attention in 1912 by leading groups of suffragists on long walking campaigns, most notably a winter march from New York City toward Albany to press for women's voting rights. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. The picture still offers a glimpse of the public street activism that characterized the suffrage movement in the 1910s.
