Anna Pavlova, the Russian ballerina, and her dance partner Laurent Novikoff are the pair named in this glass negative's title, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service. Pavlova toured the United States widely in the 1910s and 1920s, and her company's appearances drew a steady stream of press photographs of the dancers in costume and in performance. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that sold photographs to newspapers and magazines, so images like this one were made for quick publication. The glass plate format of the period also gives the picture its fine detail and tonal range.
