The record identifies this picture only by the name Natalie Alt, a label taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, and it gives no date. The image survives as a single glass negative, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, the format the New York agency used for much of its early twentieth-century work. Bain's photographers covered theater people, politicians, athletes and other public figures, and their negatives were meant for newspaper reproduction. Because the name is unverified, the caption reflects the agency's own record rather than a confirmed identification.
