Dated July 3, 1863, this pencil drawing belongs to the third and final day of the battle, when Confederate infantry under George Pickett advanced across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. That assault, known as Pickett's Charge, failed under heavy artillery and rifle fire, and its collapse is often seen as the turning point of the campaign. The drawing came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919 and was later published in a 1975 selection from the Library's pictorial holdings. Artists working in the 1860s often made sketches like this one to convey battles to newspapers and the public.
