Published as a book cover, this image draws its framing from the phrase "the bloodiest battle of the Civil War," a reputation Gettysburg earned during three days of fighting in southern Pennsylvania, July 1 to 3, 1863. Union forces under George Meade held the high ground south of the town against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and the fighting, including Pickett's Charge on the final afternoon, left roughly 50,000 men killed, wounded, captured, or missing. Historians often treat the battle as a turning point in the war in the East, after which Lee never again led a large invasion of the North.
