This drawing's inscription places the viewer on Cemetery Ridge on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, as Confederate troops under Longstreet advanced across the open ground below. The sketch shows Union soldiers massed on the crest behind breastworks, with heavy white smoke rising from both lines, and the notes indicate the positions of the 2nd and 3rd divisions of the First Corps. The assault that followed, known as Pickett's Charge, was the final major Confederate attack of the three-day battle and ended in heavy losses. Because the sketch was made in the field, it offers a rare view of the battle's climax from the Union line.
