The record gives this glass negative only the generic title "Monument," and the cataloger notes that the name comes from unverified data on the negative or its sleeve, so the exact subject is uncertain. It is one of the 8 by 6 inch plates made around 1916 and 1917 by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed the city's landmarks, streets and public buildings for postcards and souvenir views. Look for the streaks and blemishes in the image, which the catalog attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
