The St. Johns River meets the Atlantic in a broad, marshy estuary, and this engraved panorama takes in that wide mouth as seen from the water looking inland. Views like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when engravers turned sketches made on site into long horizontal scenes for books and magazines. Such panoramas were valued for showing the shape of a coastline and the low profile of the land, and they give a sense of how the river entrance looked to ships approaching from the sea.
