The mouth of the St. Johns River, seen looking out toward the Atlantic, marks where Florida's longest river, which runs north for more than 300 miles, finally meets the ocean near Jacksonville. The waterway shaped the region long before the city grew on its banks. Its broad, slow current carried timber, citrus and passengers for generations, and the river's entrance was a working point for shipping and pilots guiding vessels over its shifting bars. Worth noticing is how open and unsettled the shoreline appears, a reminder of how much of this coast was still being carved and built up.
