Where many pictures on the Florida board show towns and waterfronts, this one turns to the state's swamplands, the slow, dark wetlands that once covered large parts of the peninsula. Cypress and tupelo trees rising from standing water defined these landscapes, which made travel, farming and settlement difficult for generations and were often a challenge to drain. Views like this were often made by travelers and photographers who found the scenes strange and forbidding, and they now serve as a reminder of how much of Florida was once water rather than dry land.
