Few pictures capture the Ocklawaha River after dark, and this one shows a vessel making its way upstream at night. For decades, steamboats carried passengers up the winding Ocklawaha from the St. Johns River toward the clear springs and tourist attractions of the interior. Navigating the narrow, cypress-lined channel after sunset would have demanded close attention from pilots. Rodman Dam was later built across the river, and the resulting Rodman Reservoir flooded much of the waterway, so scenes like this now survive mainly as historical record.
