Sunset on the Oklawaha, as the title spells the river's name, shows the water taking on soft bands of color, which is the effect the photochrom process was made to capture. The Oklawaha winds through central Florida toward the St. Johns, a slow, dark-watered stream lined with cypress, and it drew steamboat travelers and winter visitors who were eager for the subtropical scenery the state promoted at the time. Detroit Publishing Company issued this view around 1899 as one of its richly colored travel prints, so it reflects the period's appetite for tourism as much as the landscape itself.
