Silver Spring, near Ocala in north-central Florida, is one of the state's largest freshwater springs, and this engraving centers on its clear, still water framed by trees. Views like this circulated widely in the nineteenth century, when travel writers and publishers presented Florida to northern readers as a place of mild winters and natural wonders. The spring's remarkable clarity later drew visitors who rode glass-bottom boats to watch fish and eelgrass below the surface. Notice how the water mirrors the trees, a detail the engraver used to suggest calm and depth.
