Stacked cypress shingles fill this Florida yard, a sight tied to a trade that once supplied roofing and siding across the state. Cypress was prized for shingles because its heartwood resists rot and insects, even when left exposed to rain. Yards like this one, where shingles were bundled and left to dry before shipping, were part of a lumber economy that logged cypress heavily from swamps and river bottoms in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The orderly rows of stacks show how much care went into drying and sorting the wood.
