Few posters on this board were addressed to Italian-speaking readers, and this one asks Italian Americans to cut back on meat, wheat, fat and sugar. Printed in Brooklyn in 1917, it carries the United States Food Administration's seal and the notice "Amministrazione dei Cibi," the Italian name for that wartime agency. Its message is that food saved at home would go to American people and to Italy's troops, who were fighting on the Italian front. The campaign was led by Herbert Hoover, whose agency encouraged voluntary conservation through meatless and wheatless days. The poster's bilingual wording shows how the government reached immigrant communities in their own language.
