Printed entirely in Polish, this 1917 lithograph invokes Tadeusz Kościuszko and Kazimierz Pulaski, two Polish officers who fought for American independence, to urge readers to conserve wheat, meat, fats and sugar. Pulaski died at Savannah in 1779, and Kościuszko later led the 1794 uprising in Poland, so both men were already symbols of liberty for Polish immigrants. Issued under the United States Food Administration, which Herbert Hoover directed, the poster linked wartime food rationing to a shared memory of sacrifice for freedom.
