The title "Auto Peds," supplied by the National Photo Company, points to a street scene where motor cars and pedestrians shared the same space. That tension was new in the 1910s, when automobiles were spreading through American cities that had been built around horses, streetcars, and foot traffic. The company, a Washington, D.C., commercial firm, documented the city and the nation for decades, and its glass negatives now form part of the Library of Congress collection. Look for the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
