Captured on November 19, 1863, during the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this view was made by Alexander Gardner, a Washington photographer, on a wet collodion glass negative for stereograph viewers. Edward Everett delivered the main oration that day, and Abraham Lincoln followed with his brief remarks, now known as the Gettysburg Address. A 2007 examination suggested that Lincoln may be visible in the crowd when the image is magnified, though the figure is difficult to confirm.
