This print takes its title from the text of the speech itself, which Abraham Lincoln delivered on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the national cemetery on the Gettysburg battlefield. Edward Everett gave the main oration that day, but Lincoln's remarks, under three minutes long, became the more enduring words of the occasion. The print was issued by M.T. Sheahan of Boston and dated January 11, 1909, weeks before the centennial of Lincoln's birth, when many commemorative pictures of the speech and its author were produced. Its color treatment reflects the photomechanical methods that made such patriotic keepsakes affordable to a wide public.
