A proof copy of this lithographed view carries a facsimile endorsement from George G. Meade, the Union commander at Gettysburg, who wrote that he was satisfied with how accurately the topography and troop positions were drawn. The view was drawn by John B. Bachelder, the battlefield historian who spent years interviewing veterans of both armies to fix where units had stood, and it was printed by Endicott & Co. of Boston and New York. The reproduced signatures of other officers beneath Meade's statement suggest the map was meant to carry the authority of the men who fought there. The battle, fought July 1 to 3, 1863, turned back Lee's invasion of the North.
