Few maps of the Gettysburg field carry as much weight as this one, because George G. Meade signed a statement on the sheet declaring himself satisfied with how accurately the terrain and troop positions were drawn. The view was made by J. B. Bachelder, who spent years surveying the ground and questioning veterans after the fighting of July 1 to 3, 1863, and it was published by Endicott & Co. in Boston and New York. The reproduced signatures of Abner Doubleday, John Newton and Winfield S. Hancock, all Union generals who fought there, add to its value as a record of how the commanders saw the battle.
