Few views capture the aftermath of the Confederate capital's fall as directly as this one. Taken in April 1865, when Union forces had just entered Richmond, Virginia, it looks west across the city from a high vantage point and forms the left half of a wider panorama. The photograph was printed later on albumen paper, the standard process of the period, and it preserves the skyline and street grid of a city that had spent four years as the seat of the Confederacy.
