The baseball scene on this Havana tobacco label sets it apart from the city's many cigar-band images of dancers, politicians, and tropical scenery. Baseball reached Cuba in the 1860s, carried by students and travelers returning from the United States, and it quickly became a popular pastime. Cigar makers printed these small paper labels to identify their brands, and by including the sport they tied their product to a fashionable new interest. The engraved detail reflects the lithographic printing that Havana's cigar trade used to make its packaging stand out.
