Havana's harbor, with its narrow entrance guarded by the Morro Castle on one side, was the gateway for the city's sugar and tobacco trade in the mid-1800s. Views like this one, colored by hand over a printed base, were popular in the 19th century among travelers and merchants who wanted a souvenir of the port. Look at the masts crowding the waterfront and the fortified shoreline, which show how central shipping and defense were to daily life in the city.
