The brass mat is stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati," which ties this quarter-plate daguerreotype to a specific studio and place. Cincinnati was a busy river city in the 1850s, and its studios drew sitters who wanted a polished likeness in a small hinged case. The three women remain unidentified, so the portrait speaks through their clothing, posture and close grouping, a common choice for family or friends sitting together. Like all daguerreotypes, it is a single mirror-like image on silvered copper.
