The negative is labeled only "Rev. J.H. Holmes," and the initials are consistent with John Haynes Holmes, a Unitarian minister in New York who led the Community Church and was active in social reform and civil liberties in the early twentieth century. The Bain caption data was recorded without verification, so the identification should be treated as a working guess. The Bain News Service made and distributed these glass negatives for newspapers from about 1900 through the 1920s, and its pictures are a useful record of how the press photographed public figures of that era.
