The record gives us a name and little else: a glass negative of John J. Lents, made for the Bain News Service, whose founder George Grantham Bain built one of the largest pictorial newsfile collections in the country. The Bain News Service operated in New York from about 1899 into the 1920s, supplying newspapers with photographs of politicians, athletes, performers and everyday news, so a portrait from this file was likely taken for a press caption. The title comes from data the service itself wrote on the negative or its card, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the subject's identity and role should be treated as provisional.
