John Muir, the Scottish-born naturalist and writer, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency run by George Grantham Bain that supplied press pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Muir was the founder of the Sierra Club in 1892 and became one of the most influential voices for setting aside wild land in the United States, helping to win protection for Yosemite. The record gives no date for the portrait, and its title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed.
