The title names Oliver Wendell Holmes, but the record does not say which Holmes appears, and the notes flag the title as unverified. Because the Bain News Service worked mainly from about 1900 into the early 1920s, the likeliest subject is Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., the Civil War veteran who sat on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932. Bain's staff often photographed public figures for newspaper use, so this glass negative most likely records a newsworthy occasion rather than a private portrait.
