Rehearsal photographs like this one show the stage production of *Oliver Twist* in its unpolished stage, a stretch of preparation audiences rarely see. Charles Dickens published the novel in serial form from 1837 to 1839, and its story of a workhouse boy and London's criminal underworld made it a favorite for stage adaptations almost from the start. The George Grantham Bain Collection comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of theatrical and public life, often taken on short notice. The date and cast for this negative are not recorded, so the title should be read with some caution.
