Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco in west-central Mexico, is the subject named in this glass negative, which belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s through the 1920s, produced negatives like this one, and its caption cards often identified places from their own sources rather than from a verified record. The exact date and photographer are not recorded, so the scene itself is the main guide. Guadalajara was among Mexico's largest and most important cities in this period, and images from it help show how the city looked to American editors and readers of the day.
