A broad view of the whole city, rather than a single street or building, makes this sheet a useful record of early nineteenth-century Boston. In that period the town was a busy Atlantic port, its wharves crowded with shipping, and its skyline was shaped by church steeples, the gilded dome of Charles Bulfinch's State House on Beacon Hill, and the brick warehouses along the waterfront. Views like this were often prized by residents who wanted to see their growing city laid out at once, and they still show how closely the harbor, the streets, and the surrounding hills were tied together.
