Asking viewers to see America through its national parks, this 1936 silkscreen also lists waterfalls among its subjects, a reminder of how much of the appeal lay in natural scenery. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced posters like it during the Depression, when flat color and simplified shapes helped promote domestic travel at a time when many Americans had little money to spare. Silkscreen suited the work because it could yield large, vivid runs at modest cost. A 1940 date stamp on the back shows the sheet was still being handled years after it was printed.
