Few recruiting posters from the first months of the war name a unit as specifically as this one, which calls on men to join the Canadian Mounted Rifles. Canada entered the First World War automatically when Britain declared war in August 1914, and the country raised volunteers quickly through the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Mounted rifles units were mounted infantry who rode to the field but usually fought on foot, a mix that appealed to men who already knew horses and the open country of the Canadian West. The poster's color lithography reflects the commercial printing methods used to reach recruits across the country.
