The Canadian Grenadier Guards were a Montreal militia regiment, and this 1914 poster ties recruiting directly to that local identity. After Britain declared war and Canada committed troops to the Empire's cause, militia regiments became a major source of volunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Posters like this one were displayed on city walls and boards to turn regimental pride into enlistment. Its record also credits the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, an American wartime agency founded in 1917, which shows that the lithograph's later history crossed the border.
