Few recruiting posters from 1914 name a single Canadian regiment as directly as this one, which calls on men to join the Canadian Grenadier Guards, a Montreal militia unit. Canada entered the war in August 1914 when Britain's declaration automatically brought the dominion in, and within weeks the country was raising volunteers for what became the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The record also lists the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation as sponsor, an American agency with no obvious link to Canadian enlistment, so that credit is worth verifying when studying the piece.
