Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond the name Rolland H. Spaulding, and the Library of Congress notes that even that title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card. The sitter's identity and the date of the portrait are therefore open questions. The record does establish the source: the plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs of people and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, many of them portraits of public figures, remain a useful record of that period's press photography.
