The record names Prince Carol of Romania as the subject of this glass negative, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. Bain's agency, based in New York, sold news photographs of public figures and events in the early twentieth century, so the picture likely served the press rather than a private portrait. Carol was heir to the Romanian throne during those years, gave up his succession rights in the 1920s, and returned to become king in 1930. Because the record gives no date, the photograph's exact moment is uncertain.
