This glass negative shows Count Albert Apponyi with his daughter, a pairing that sets it apart from the many portraits of Apponyi in the Bain collection. Apponyi was a leading Hungarian conservative politician and parliamentary orator who headed his country's delegation to the post-World War I peace talks and fought the terms that cut Hungary's territory. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold photographs to newspapers, recorded many visiting statesmen, and the record's title comes from caption information the agency supplied. The record gives no date, so the picture's exact year is unknown.
