Pskov is one of the oldest cities in northwestern Russia, with a fortified kremlin on the banks of the Velikaya River that dates back centuries before this negative was made. This glass negative is undated in its record, and its title comes from caption information that the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption cards, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs in the early 20th century, so the image likely reflects the outside world's interest in Russian places during that period. Viewers should note that the agency's titles were sometimes approximate.
