Soprano Geraldine Farrar and Dutch-born actor Lou Tellegen, who married in 1916, are the subjects of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news and celebrity photographs in the early twentieth century. Farrar was a leading Metropolitan Opera singer who also became a popular silent film star, and Tellegen worked in both stage and screen acting, so the pairing reflects how performers of the period moved between opera, theater, and the growing film industry. The record gives no date for the sitting, so it is best read as part of the agency's wider run of celebrity portraits from the 1910s and 1920s.
