The only identifier this glass negative carries is the title "Farrar," which the Library of Congress notes is unverified and was taken from Bain News Service negatives or caption cards. The surname may refer to the soprano Geraldine Farrar, a prominent Metropolitan Opera singer in the early twentieth century, but the record does not confirm that. George Grantham Bain built his news photo service in New York around the turn of the century, selling pictures of people and events to newspapers, and 5-by-7-inch glass negatives were a common working format for that trade. With no date recorded, the image is best understood within the service's broader output in the 1900s and 1910s.
