A book cover from 1891 bearing gold lettering on brown cloth gives a quieter view of Yellowstone than the scenic photographs that usually fill a landmarks board. Yellowstone had been set aside as the nation's first national park in 1872, and by the early 1890s guidebooks, travel accounts and government reports were carrying its name to a growing readership back east. Publishers dressed such volumes in stamped cloth like this one, so the cover itself shows how the park was packaged for armchair travelers. The gilt title is worth a close look as an example of late nineteenth-century bookbinding.
