The name Elna Munch is the only identifying detail attached to this glass negative, and it comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or cards, not from a verified source. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York around 1899 to supply news pictures to newspapers, and its files hold many portraits, events and street scenes from the early twentieth century. Small glass plates like this one, generally 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were the standard working medium for press photographers of that era. The image is useful as a record of how news photographs were made and stored, even where its subject remains unconfirmed.
