Set in the Šárka valley on the western edge of Prague, this glass negative records an open-air theater in the wooded, stream-cut landscape that Praguers visited for summer outings and performances. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, collected and distributed news and feature photographs from the early 1900s into the 1920s, and its captions were often taken from unverified information, so the exact date and occasion are uncertain. The glass plate itself shows the fine tonal detail of an early commercial photographic process, and the outdoor setting is a useful record of how such theatres were arranged in the landscape.
