This glass negative records Theodore Roosevelt at Oyster Bay on Long Island, where he kept his family estate, Sagamore Hill, and often spent time away from Washington and New York. The title comes from the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency whose staff supplied pictures to newspapers, and the record does not confirm its date. Bain's work from the early 1900s, when Roosevelt was a frequent subject, documents how news photography of public figures was taking shape. Glass plates like this one, made for quick reproduction, remain a useful record of that period.
