The West Side Tennis Club stood in Forest Hills, Queens, and its grounds were home to the U.S. national tennis championships for much of the twentieth century. The Bain News Service, the photo agency that made this glass negative, supplied news pictures of sports, celebrities and public events to newspapers in the early 1900s and 1910s. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the picture offers a glimpse of how tennis was staged and watched in that era. Its clothing, grounds and spectators are worth a close look.
