The caption on this glass negative names a Goodyear balloon, a reference to the Akron, Ohio, rubber company that built lighter-than-air craft and later became known for its advertising blimps. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency, supplied many of the pictures in George Grantham Bain's collection, but the title comes from agency notes that have not been verified, so the exact date and flight remain unknown. Goodyear's airships were a familiar sight over American stadiums and cities for decades, and this view offers a glimpse of the company's long interest in flight.
